“Through the quiet streets of a fishing village that lay at the mouth of a turbulent river, a cry rang out, “Boy Overboard!” Quickly a crowd gathered and anxious eyes looked out over the rushing water to see the figure of the drowning boy. Every anxious mother’s heart cried, “Is it my boy?”
A
rope was brought and the strongest swimmer in the village volunteered to rescue
the drowning lad. Tying one end of the
rope around his waist, he threw the other end into the crowd and plunged into
the raging waters. Eagerly everyone
watched the swimmer breast the tide with strong, sure, strokes and a cheer went
up when he reached the boy and grasped him safely in his powerful arms. “Pull
in the rope!” “Pull in the rope!” He shouted over the furious waters.
“Hold The Ropes!” On May 30, 1792 William Carey considered, ”The
Father of Modern Missions” preached a sermon on Isaiah 54:2-3 on reaching the
lost. In a private conference with his
closest friends immediately following the service, Carey laid himself on the missionary
altar saying, “I will go down into the pit if you will hold the ropes.”
There the ‘Baptist Society For Propagating The Gospel Among The Heathen”
was formed. The mission was to be
supported by personal, individual subscriptions. On
“Hold The Ropes!” For nearly 2,000 years, faithful men and
women have been holding the ropes, so other faithful men and women could
devote their lives to full time missions.
I am asked on occasion, “Where are the William Carey’s and Hudson
Taylor’s of yesterday?” My response to
that question is simple, “Where are the Ryland’s, Fuller’s, Sutcliff’s and
Pearce’s of today who will hold the ropes, pray and financially support
those who will go with the Gospel?”
“Hold The Ropes!” You can find that life-changing concept
throughout the Bible. In Joshua
“Hold The Ropes!” Ann and I have been on the mission field,
full time now since
“Hold The Ropes!” From William Carey’s message in 1792 came
a new couplet, “Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for
God.” Listen to the words of Isaiah the
prophet written over 2,700 years ago and preached by William Carey over 200
years ago. “Enlarge the place of thy
tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations; Spare not,
lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; For thou shalt break forth on
the right hand and on the left, and thy seed shall inherit the nations, and
make the desolate cities to be inhabited.” Isaiah 54:2-3. It seems to resonate the prayer of Jabez in I
Chronicles 4:10.
“Hold The Ropes!” Right now we need a few committed ‘Rope-Handlers’ like Fuller, Ryland and
Pearce who will faithfully pray, give and hold the rope tight so we can,
“Go
Tell Zion, Their God Reigns.” Isaiah 52:7. Please ‘Bevakasha,’ just pray and ask God
if He wants you to join the team and hold the rope? Time is running out for the ‘Nation of
Israel’ and for the Jewish people as a whole.
One Jewish person dies without their Messiah every 2.5 minutes. Therefore, we need your help, we need it now,
and we do not have a minute to waste!
