“Through the quiet streets of a fishing village that lay at the mouth of a turbulent river, a cry rang out, “Boy Overboard!” Quickly a crowd gathered and anxious eyes looked out over the rushing water to see the figure of the drowning boy. Every anxious mother’s heart cried, “Is it my boy?”
A rope was brought and the strongest swimmer in the village volunteered to rescue the drowning lad. Tying one end of the rope around his waist, he threw the other end into the crowd and plunged into the raging waters. Eagerly everyone watched the swimmer breast the tide with strong, sure, strokes and a cheer went up when he reached the boy and grasped him safely in his powerful arms. “Pull in the rope!” “Pull in the rope!” He shouted over the furious waters.
The villagers looked from one to another, “Who is holding the rope?” they asked? No one was holding the rope! In the excitement of watching the rescue, the end of the rope had slipped into the water and disappeared. Powerless to help, they watched not one but two precious lives go down because no one had made it their business to, hold the shore end of the rope!” Millions today are left to perish for eternity because there is no one to, “Hold the ‘Shore-End’ of the rope!”
“Hold The Ropes!” On May 30, 1792 William Carey considered, ”The Father of Modern Missions” preached a sermon on Isaiah 54:2-3 on reaching the lost. In a private conference with his closest friends immediately following the service, Carey laid himself on the missionary altar saying, “I will go down into the pit if you will hold the ropes.” There the ‘Baptist Society For Propagating The Gospel Among The Heathen” was formed. The mission was to be supported by personal, individual subscriptions. On June 13, 1793 William Carey left for India with his wife and their four children for forty years of unbroken missionary service.
“Hold The Ropes!” For nearly 2,000 years, faithful men and women have been holding the ropes, so other faithful men and women could devote their lives to full time missions. I am asked on occasion, “Where are the William Carey’s and Hudson Taylor’s of yesterday?” My response to that question is simple, “Where are the Ryland’s, Fuller’s, Sutcliff’s and Pearce’s of today who will hold the ropes, pray and financially support those who will go with the Gospel?”
“Hold The Ropes!” You can find that life-changing concept throughout the Bible. In Joshua 2:15 Rahab the harlot, let the Jewish spies down through a window, on the wall with a cord (Chebel – Rope). Rahab became the mother of Boaz and is in the messianic line of Christ. In I Samuel 19:12 Michal the daughter of Saul, let a Jewish shepherd down through a window by a rope and he became the next, ‘King of Israel.’ In Jeremiah 38:6, Jeremiah was let down into a pit by a rope to die but in v.13 his faithful friends pulled him out of the pit with a rope and saved his life. In Acts 9:25 and II Corinthians 11:33 Paul the apostle was let down through a window, over the wall in a basket with a rope by his faithful friends to save his life. These ‘Rope-Handlers’ were not great, or mighty or rich, they were just faithful and they did what they could.
“Hold The Ropes!” Ann and I have been on the mission field, full time now since January 1, 1994 and God has miraculously met every one of our needs, every year through His faithful stewards. Our support level may fluctuate from time to time but our God never does, He always remains faithful. Recently we lost some support due to economics, budget and cost of living increases, and changing mission boards. Because of these and other reasons, several have had to let go of the shore end of the rope. Therefore, we are appealing to you, His faithful stewards and our faithful friends to grab the shore end of, ‘The Rope’ and dig your heels deep into the sand and hang on tenaciously for His glory and honor.
“Hold The Ropes!” From William Carey’s message in 1792 came a new couplet, “Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God.” Listen to the words of Isaiah the prophet written over 2,700 years ago and preached by William Carey over 200 years ago. “Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations; Spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left, and thy seed shall inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.” Isaiah 54:2-3. It seems to resonate the prayer of Jabez in I Chronicles 4:10.
“Hold The Ropes!” Right now we need a few committed ‘Rope-Handlers’ like Fuller, Ryland and Pearce who will faithfully pray, give and hold the rope tight so we can, “Go Tell Zion, Their God Reigns.” Isaiah 52:7. Please ‘Bevakasha,’ just pray and ask God if He wants you to join the team and hold the rope? Time is running out for the ‘Nation of Israel’ and for the Jewish people as a whole. One Jewish person dies without their Messiah every 2.5 minutes. Therefore, we need your help, we need it now, and we do not have a minute to waste!
“Say unto Zion, Thy God Reigns.” Isaiah 52:7
